I would've liked more rest, more beach, a bigger bed, and less activity, but I know I got what I needed. I had the opportunity to try new things, meet new people, unexpectedly see long lost friends, reconnect with family and appreciate what I have and need, like relationships & quiet time.

So how are your weekends? your vacations from work & chores? For most people, they don't know how to rest, relax, let go and enjoy. I have family and friends who would rather push themselves into exhaustion than sit still and even worse, sit silently alone. It makes me wonder and want to us, is it louder or scarier inside than out? I know it can be for many us. At various points in our life, the inner chatter is so critical and confusing that keeping busy feels like the only solution. When we get to this point, it's hard to make any changes without support, whether that be from a loving friend, partner, or professional. The important thing is to reach out and remember that you're never alone and that living in constant chaos outside to avoid the chaos inside is no way to live - in fact you usually can't do it very long without getting sick in some way. I know that tasks, goals, productivity is important but when the cost begins to outweigh the benefit, trouble is afoot.

I had someone ask me lately to help with a tendency to overcommit - a problem over half the population has while the other half can't seem to commit to anything. I consider over-committing or over-scheduling a product of the above at times. Over-doers are usually either trying to fill an inner void yet avoid the inner critic while others are trying to "be all they can be" because they truly want to help or create. There is probably an overlap though in these departments though. It seems that even when we truly want to participate there is usually a piece of a "should" or "ought to" attached to it that is actually rooted in an even deeper judgment of self about what our critic and others will say or believe if we DON'T participate or have to "turn it over" to another person. Where is the compassion for self and the awareness that sh*t happens; meaning, sometimes things come up last minute and truly keep us from doing what we had planned or wanted to do OR sometimes in the 11th hour we are hit by the spiritual 2x4 and realize we can do another thing or we will fall over or bite someone's head off with our words.

The remedy to this tendency or at least potential softener is the practice of transition periods. How often do you truly schedule in adequate transition time and space as you go from one place or activity to another? I saw counselors for years who scheduled clients back to back seemingly all day. When I became a counselor I realized I was doing the same thing, which gave me maybe 5-10 minutes tops, to breath, remember myself, stretch, grab the next file, brief it, then jump in again. After the 4th client I was about to have a panic attack or melt into my chair as if I was watching a movie. Since then, I've made it a point to never schedule more than 3 without a 15+ minute break following and to take mini "awareness breaks" between all sessions where I breathe, body scan, and determine what I need and how I can give it to myself before the next session in some form or fashion - even if it's just writing myself a note of encouragement or doing one yoga pose. All my activities and adventures outside of work are considered "penciled in" unless they are super super important...but even some of those have been abandoned in the end if I was too cooked to do another something. My determining factor usually has to do with how present and alert am I right now. Can I feel the energy and breath in my body? Is my mind feeling alert and open? If I cannot answer these questions and give myself thorough details as if I were an observing witness and an experiencer of them, then I probably need a break. Sometimes, a slow short walk with deep breathing will do it, other times, it's a 30 minutes nap, a few yoga poses, free-flow writing, or even having a relaxing cup of tea or more elicit beverage quietly on the back deck.

What items on your schedule can you begin to pencil in? Remember to evaluate how each event supports you or stresses you. Don't take out the ones that support you, even if they feel like the ones that are somehow "optional" - like a walk over another 30 minutes of work. Build in some transition time between each event then double the amount of time you think you need. We usually short ourselves on the good things and overdo the unhealthy ones. After a week, see how you feel then decide how you want to go forward.

As a holistic counselor and wellness consultant, I am glad to support you and assist you in your journey. For confidential support, call 205-908-1247 or email me awakenedliving2010@gmail.com.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #20124d; The other group of 30 had to wait three months to attend a second retreat at the Shambhala Center; this second group served as the study's control group. The researchers gave the two groups concentration tests before the retreat began, halfway through and then again after the sabbatical ended. During the retreats, the attendees underwent at least five hours a day of meditative practice.(Read about how yoga improves quality of life after cancer.)

That's an extraordinary commitment to meditation that most of us can't relate to. (The attendees even paid $5,300 for the privilege of attending the retreats.) But while all the participants were highly willing, the strength of this new study lies in comparing their mental performance before, during and after they began meditative practice. (Comment on this story.)

And the results are clear: it's not wanting to meditate but actually meditating that improves your brain's performance. The participants were all asked to watch a series of lines flash on a computer screen and click a mouse when they saw a line that was shorter than the others. It was a boring test, and that was the point: in order to concentrate on those little line changes, they had to focus intently. Those who were meditating at the retreat were significantly more likely than those in the wait-list group to see increasingly small differences in the lines. Their abilities improved as meditative training continued. As the paper puts it, their powers of "visual discrimination" had appreciably increased.

Which suggests that meditation can help you concentrate. But the study found that while meditators were more accurate, they were not faster: those who had meditated saw differences in the lines more often than those who hadn't, but they didn't react any faster than the control group when both saw the same line discrepancies on the screen. That's important because it suggests that meditation helps your brain do something automatic - process visual stimuli - but not something more complicated: react when it happens.

I couldn't quite afford to attend the Shambhala Mountain retreat, but recently, I decided to try a small, five-minute-a-day mindfulness regimen recommended to me by the University of Washington psychology professor Marsha Linehan. One of the simple techniques Linehan uses to improve patients' mood and concentration is to ask them to sit on a park bench or at a street corner - any public place - and direct their eyes forward as strangers walk by. The idea is to avoid looking at the passersby even if they are interesting - you just let them walk by. You notice them, but you keep your mind focused on not watching them, not following them. I have been practicing this technique at New York City's congested High Line park for the past few weeks. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, has written many Dharma books and Gen Mondrub spoke from Transform Your Life & Eight Steps to Happiness about relationships & love.

Here are some of the things that stood out to me:
Real, authentic LOVE never causes pain or suffering. It is our attachment to things/people/circumstances that we THINK bring us happiness that actually causes pain & suffering because we have focused on the object/person's positive qualities and bought into the illusion that only those good qualities exist and that those qualities have the ability to make me happy or sad when they are no longer around.
Love is also not about me (self-cherishing love) but about serving other's through affectionate love, cherishing love, & wishing love. It is through focusing my love and attention onto others that I begin to feel and experience love within, eventually realizing that I AM that love and that love comes from WITHIN me and I can NEVER be separated from love, peace, & happiness, intrinsically. It is those false beliefs (attachments/aversions) mentioned above and excess focus on self-cherishing brought about from my mind that cause me stress, not love itself.
On the other hand though, love does not mean neglecting myself or allowing others to abuse and mistreat me. Sometimes the most loving thing I can do is separate myself from another so that they don't create more negative karma and may actually learn a new skill or release an old pattern through my boundary setting.

Loving the challenging people in our life came up and Gen Mondrub's response was gentle and loving. He pointed out how hard it is to love those people who anger, hurt, abuse, neglect, etc. us but how much they in fact need our love. When we allow those negative feelings and memories to consume us, we push those people/situations/institutions out of our heart when what we actually need to do is bring them into our hearts, bestowing loving kindness and compassion towards them. Often those that hurt or anger us the most are the ones in the most pain and are really looking, asking, grasping for love yet don't know how to ask for it.

Who needs your love today? Can you find a way to bring even part of them into your heart?

First, find your breath, your body, your heart. Second, call to mind something/someone that helps you access your loving, peaceful heart. Third, from that soft space, invite in those guests, even the ones who tear through your home leaving destruction and devastation. As Rumi says, maybe they are cleaning you out for something wonderful and beautiful to arrive next.

Namaste,
Lyndsey

Relationship Seminar

Liberating Relationships
A New Model for Lasting Happiness & Harmony

Come hear Gen Mondrub teach & lead meditation about the nature of relationships and how to free all our relationships so that they create happiness & harmony.

WHEN: Monday June 21st from 7-9pm

WHERE: Crestwood Yoga & Massage
5508 Crestwood Blvd., Birmingham, AL 35212
Contact Lyndsey @ 205-908-1247

HOW MUCH: $10/person or $5/students & senior

*Please Register Ahead – Space Limited to 25 people (bring chairs/cushions)

Teaching by Gen Mondrub, disciple of Ven. Every session is meant to create and provide a safe, non-judgmental, unconditionally loving space where participants can be themselves (or begin to find themselves) & simply share without feedback or criticism. This group is not psychotherapy, group counseling, or a support group but more similar to the open forum of 12 step groups where listening and keeping the focus on one's own experiences is encouraged. It invites presence and awareness rather than prescribed treatments. Using age-old yogic approaches to deepen presence and awareness, we are able to know ourselves more fully.
Out of this knowing, we are more easily moved to embrace the opportunity for change, growth, and enhanced well-being in body, feelings, thought, and spirit." In PRYT, yogic philosophy is incorporated with modern psychology, specifically the theories developed by Carl Rogers and
Carl Jung.
Through the use of assisted and supported yoga postures, guided breathing, and non-directive reflective dialogue, you experience physical sensations with more focus so that deeper mental and emotional connections can arise. This one-on-one experience is done on a padded mat with clothes on for 1.5 hours. Clients report various improvements, whether they include increased relaxation, release from chronic pain, and opening and releasing of undesirable behavior patterns and traumas. Lyndsey has been in training since October '08 and hopes to bring this integrative modality to all who are looking to hear the deeper wisdom held within them through this body-mind-spirit exploration. Sessions are half price on a sliding scale until September.

For more information call or email us. The practitioner encourages the client to focus on the present happenings inside them through coaching of observation of movement and breath. Sessions begin with a centering followed by therapist led movements & reflecting dialogue then end with an integration where the client has a chance to see what insights arose and how to integrate them into their daily life.

Various benefits of PRYT vary from relaxation & stretch to opening into the healing of traumatic life events, undesirable patterns/behaviors, anxiety, & depression. No guarantees are made though because each person's body & process is different, even session to session, but the session always allows a receiving/intent setting at the start despite the non-prescriptive nature, allowing the client to be the guide as to how far their body is moved and what they say.

For more information, I can send you one of many published articles about Phoenix Rising & answer any questions. The link to the Center's website is under the Resources section. You can also try out a mini or modified session where we do a shorter session or work entirely from a chair versus from the cushioned mat on the floor. First sessions are FREE until I complete my certification in August/September 2009. Starting May 2009, sessions will be 1/2 price - $45 or whatever you can pay. The only requirement for sessions is a willingness to try something new, fill out an evaluation for me at the end, and maybe let me record the session for my reports to my supervising mentor with Phoenix Rising.

Holiday Gifts

Want to give your friends & family a gift that they can use vs. another present that sits on a shelf collecting dust?

Give them a gift certificate for a Health Coaching Session or Private Yoga Session. As a result many people believe it is wasteful to seek any services that are not NECESSARY, but what is truly necessary & what can we really afford? While this crisis has ruined many & scared even more, I encourage you to stay centered & look deep at what truly feeds you & supplies you.

While daily or even weekly services such as manicures, massages & mental health counseling may seem a luxury or an unnecessary expense, HOW DO YOU FEEL AFTERWARDS? Is there a before & after difference? Spending wisely is important but it's also important to take care of your INTERNAL NEEDS as much as your external. We hear in our culture that we should give & sacrifice & help others, but to what extent & at what cost?

"Place the oxygen mask on yourself before you place it on a child or help someone else." "Love your neighbor as yourself." Sound familiar. If we don't take care of our own needs then how will we help anyone else? If we don't know how to really LOVE ourselves then how can we love others?

So give yourself a much needed & DESERVED service so that you can continue to be your best or BETTER! Because the happier & more balanced you are inside the brighter the world (& eventually, the economy) will be. If you want the service & the rewards then I'll help you get it at an affordable rate.

TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE.

Peace.

Services

Holistic Counseling (Individual / Group): depression, anxiety, substance abuse, women's issues, GLBT issues, trauma, relationships, spirituality, pain management, grief

Nutritional Balancing: foods that heal, dietary restrictions, how to cook for health

Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy (Private / Group) : reconnect with the wisdom of your own body, allowing deeper awareness, insight & healing in many areas of your life; bring about stress reduction; encourage team building

Kripalu Yoga Sessions (Private / Group Class): lose weight, strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, decrease stress, improve sleep, increase relaxation, & heal injuries

Reiki Energy & Integration Sessions: balance the energy field, soothe mind/body/spirit, process energetic/emotional memories

Journey into Mind/Body-Based Therapy

Lyndsey has been practicing counseling, yoga, East-West philosophy, religion & meditation for 10 years. Being a competitive athlete throughout high school she was sidelined in college by a back injury in 2001. As a result she began looking for something that would gently challenge & heal her body but also bring peace to her chattering mind. Through this and other experiences, Lyndsey was drawn to the field of holistic health & wellness where she could combine her various interests into a modality of treatment that could help a wide array of people improve their lives as well like she did.

After college, she attained her Masters Degree in Counseling and several yoga certifications that gave her the tools to help clients unite mind, body & spirit. Through experience with, training in, and/or use of mind-body based therapies & philosophies such as Rogerian/Jungian theory, Pesso-Boyden System Psychomotor, Kripalu & Kundalini yoga, mindfulness meditation/centering prayer & Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, Lyndsey has been able to virtually eliminate her physical ailments & balance stress without the use of traditional medications. She continues to explore & educate herself about these & other therapies with the guidance & supervision of experienced mentors in these fields.

Lyndsey works closely with clients in developing a treatment plan that uniquely fits their needs and abilities. Her specialities include but are not limited to mood imbalances, nutritional support, addiction recovery, GLBT issues, couples, spirituality, & career exploration.
